DAY 1

This tour departs from Durban. We will pick you up from your accommodation and head up into the mountains towards the scenic town of Underberg. Once we arrive in Underberg, we will grab a coffee and embark on our journey up into Lesotho.

Time to head up to the highest pass in South Africa, the daunting Sani Pass. We travel through Himeville to the World Heritage Site of the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park, following the Mkomazana River up the scenic Sani Valley to the South African Border Post (border formalities) and the Lesotho Border.

After the Lesotho border formalities at the top of Sani Pass, we climb even further into the Lesotho highlands, all the way to the top of the Black Mountain pass. At the top of Black Mountain Pass we get a chance to leave our vehicle, climb a short distance to a beautiful viewpoint of Thabana Ntlenyana.

Once we arrive in the town of Mokhotlong, we will enjoy a spot of lunch together. Time to visit a traditional Basotho village or opt for horse-rinding through the Lesotho Highlands. Watch the sun go down on the top of Black Mountain Pass as we make our back to Sani Pass where our overnight accommodation awaits.

DAY 2

The next morning you will meet your guide after a hearty breakfast to choose your activity for the morning – hiking, horse riding or immerse yourself in more of the areas culture and history and your personal guide shows you around. We make our way back down the Sani Pass for lunch which is enjoyed in the small village of Underberg before we head back to Durban.

After a hearty breakfast, you will meet your guide and get ready for your seconds day’s adventures. Choose between one of three activities: 1) a visit to a cultural village, 2) a hike at the top of Sani Pass or 3) come back down the pass to explore the villages of Underberg and Himeville and its museum. We will arrive back in Himeville in time for lunch. If you aren’t in a hurry we’ll enjoy lunch together at Himeville’s best foodie spot before departing to Durban.

Sani Pass is on the outskirts of Underberg and Himeville and links South Africa to the mountain-kingdom of Lesotho. For a number of years the pass has given many an adventure that gets the heart racing. In 1955 it was opened to vehicle traffic giving 4×4 drivers a chance to navigate this epic path. Because of the terrain, even to this day only 4×4 vehicles are permitted to take this route into the ‘Kingdom in the Sky’.

Mokhotlong, Lesotho
