Durban’s Top 10 Things to do.

“When you read these lines you are either in Durban or will soon be going there. You may of course also be living there. In any event you either have established or will soon be establishing some connection with the city.

Unlike Cape Town or London or Heidelberg in Germany, Durban does not unfold itself easily either to the visitor or the denizen; unlike Johannesburg, or Port Elizabeth of course, it does not immediately repel the soul sensitive to the finer things of life.

Although it would at times produce glimpses of dramatic vistas it is no Rio or Hong Kong. In short Durban — or Durbs as we call it in a nostalgic or inebriated mood — is not a city which carries much beauty or inherent charm on its sleeve.

In many respects, however, it is almost certainly South Africa’s most charming city but the charm must be sought out, sometimes squeezed out. It is not far to seek but seek it you must.” — Barend van Niekerk [Durban at your feet]
