Immerse yourself in the awe inspiring vistas of Giants Castle within the Maloti-Drakensberg mountain range.

Road trip inland towards the Maloti-Drakensberg World Heritage Site before arriving at the emerald Giants Castle Nature Reserve. Meet your anthropologist, Dr Jeremy Hollmann, who will introduce you to the reserve before taking you on a hiking trail.

Explore the rugged terrain as you make your way to the Main Caves and delve deeper into the anthropology of the SAN people. At the Main Caves you will have a chance to see the exhibit which depicts SAN/Bushman as they are thought to have looked and lived.

Tuck into lunch at the Nottingham Road Restaurant (own cost) before journeying along the Midlands Meander. Visit to the internationally acclaimed Ardmore Ceramics where you can expect an explosion of creativity. Finish the day with an iconic stop at the Nelson Mandela Capture Site for a peek into South Africa’s notorious history and a bucketlist photograph.

Giants Castle is located in the Central Drakensberg and is 34 638 ha in size and ranges from 1 300 metres to 3 280 metres in altitude and is renowned for its rock art. This area is home to the endangered majestic Bearded Vulture. The most popular activities are hiking, climbing, trout fishing, picnicking, camping and swimming.


Midlands Meander

Midlands, KwaZulu Natal

The Midlands Meander is a region that stretches from Mooi River in the north, Hilton in the south, Karkloof in the east and the foothills of the Drakensberg in the west. Explore their collection of routes through the Midlands exploding with creativity from ceramic arts to indigenous crafts to boutique shops and farms stalls and craft breweries to cheese factories and sustainable restaurants.

FAQs

IS THIS TOUR WEATHER DEPENDANT?
Yes. In the event of very heavy rain or flash flooding within the reserve this tour can be cancelled.

WHERE WILL WE HAVE LUNCH?
Fat Harry’s Restaurant. Lunch is at the travellers own expense i.e. it is not included as part of this tour.

AGE RESTRICTION
This tour is suitable for travellers of all ages.

DIFFICULTY LEVEL
Easy-Medium! Depending on the hiking trail you choose the difficulty level my go from easy to medium. This tour is not wheelchair friendly.

WEATHER & GEAR
Comfortable closed hiking shoes are required. In the dry season and winter months (May-Sep) it can get cold with lows of 1-5 degrees celsius and highs of 17-19 degrees celsius. Summer months can get a bit hotter with lows of 8-10 degrees celsius and highs of 21-23 degrees celsius. Dress appropriately.

CANCELLATION POLICY
Cancel 7 days or more for a full refund. A 50% cancelation fee will apply to bookings cancelled between 2 and 7 days before a tour. A 100% cancelation fee will apply to bookings cancelled within 48 hours of travel.
