Spend a full day tracking Africa’s iconic Big 5 within the 2nd oldest proclaimed reserve on Planet Earth: The Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve.

Wherever you are in the Zulu Kingdom you are no more than 3 hours from the Big 5. Today, however, you’ll be a whole lot closer. We’re hitting the road pretty early (05h00). As you know wildlife, especially predators, are most active around dawn and dusk.

Hluhluwe-Imfolozi is renowned for White Rhino — after all it did save the Southern White Rhino from extinction. Enter the reserve via Memorial Gate and explore the northern sector on a morning game drive within our Hyundai H1 vehicle.

Time for a spot of lunch at Hilltop Restaurant. After lunch we will explore the southern sector of the reserve while keeping our eyes pealed for the highly endangered African Wild Dogs and Big Cats. At approximately 16h00 we will start to make our way back to Durban.

Hyundai H1 Vehicle — This is not an open safari vehicle. It is a luxury air-conditioned vehicle with large windows and high clearance resulting in a comfortable safari experience.

The Hluhluwe iMfolozi Game Reserve is Africa’s oldest reserve, declared in 1890 when white rhinos were on the brink of extinction due to hunting.

In the 1950s, the reserve brought the white rhino back from almost certain extinction and by 1960, every wild white rhino on earth lived in iMfolozi and Hluhluwe. Today, the reserve has close to 2,000 white rhinos, the densest population in the world.

The Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park covers an area of approximately 960 square kilometres, and contains almost half of the bird species in the entire southern hemisphere. Most importantly, the Park boasts 86 mammal species including Africa’s iconic Big 5 (elephant, buffalo, leopard, rhino and lion). Other notable mentions are hippopotamus, giraffe, zebra, cheetah, warthog (Pumba) and various antelopes.

IS THIS TOUR WEATHER DEPENDANT?
Yes. In the event of very heavy rain or flash flooding within the reserve this tour can be cancelled.

WHERE WILL WE HAVE LUNCH?
Hilltop Camp at Hluhluwe-Imfolozi. Lunch is at the travellers own expense i.e. it is not included as part of this tour.

Cancel 7 days or more for a full refund. A 50% cancelation fee will apply to bookings cancelled between 2 and 7 days before a tour. A 100% cancelation fee will apply to bookings cancelled within 48 hours of travel.
