WILDLIFE LOVERS SAFARI from Durban

ABOUT YOUR TOUR

Track down Africa’s fantastic beasts within the 2nd oldest reserve on Earth and traverse an award winning private Big 5 reserve in one day.

Wherever you are in the Zulu Kingdom you are no more than 3 hours from Africa’s iconic Big 5. Today, however, you’ll be a whole lot closer. We’re hitting the road pretty early (05h00). As you know wildlife, especially predators, are most active around dawn and dusk.

Enter Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve for a 2 hour morning game drive in our Hyundai H1 vehicle (this is not an open safari 4x4). Hluhluwe-Imfolozi is renowned for Southern White Rhino β€” after all it did save them from extinction. Spot of lunch at Hilltop Camp?

Time to head into a premium private game reserve! This reserve only permits travellers staying at their luxury lodges to traverse the park, unless you’re with us of course. Jump into an authentic open safari 4x4 with an experienced ranger to track those elusive big cats. At approximately 16h00 we will depart from the reserve and head back to Durban.

Hluhluwe-Imfolozi

Hluhluwe, KwaZulu Natal

The Hluhluwe iMfolozi Game Reserve is Africa’s oldest reserve, declared in 1890 when white rhinos were on the brink of extinction due to hunting.

In the 1950s, the reserve brought the white rhino back from almost certain extinction and by 1960, every wild white rhino on earth lived in iMfolozi and Hluhluwe. Today, the reserve has close to 2,000 white rhinos, the densest population in the world.

The Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park covers an area of approximately 960 square kilometres, and contains almost half of the bird species in the entire southern hemisphere. Most importantly, the Park boasts 86 mammal species including Africa’s iconic Big 5 (elephant, buffalo, leopard, rhino and lion). Other notable mentions are hippopotamus, giraffe, zebra, cheetah, warthog (Pumba) and various antelopes.

Manyoni Private Game Reserve

Mkuze, KwaZulu Natal

The reserve was established when 17 dedicated landowners dropped their fences to create a 23 000ha protected area that was chosen as a release site for the WWF Black Rhino Range Expansion Project. After the introduction of black rhinos, a herd of elephant from the Kruger National Park were translocated to the reserve. Cheetah were reintroduced in 2009.

The reserve achieved β€œBig 5” status when lions were introduced in 2011. More recently, a pack of African wild dogs, the most endangered carnivore in Africa, as well as the highly endangered pangolins were introduced making it one of the premier game reserves in South Africa.
